This past week, Waypoint Energy’s Marta Schantz attended the Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM) 2018 National Conference in Nashville, TN on behalf of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Buildings Alliance’s Advanced Rooftop Unit (RTU) Campaign, which Waypoint has been supporting since its launch in 2013. Every year, the Campaign holds a recognition program in which Campaign Participants (buildings owners and managers) and Supporters (efficiency organizations and service providers) have the opportunity to apply to and be recognized for their RTU efficiency efforts in the prior year. As the largest retail facility management conference, the PRSM Conference has proven year over year to be the natural arena for retailers and other organizations to be recognized for their leadership in RTU efficiency in front of, well, other retailers.
On Tuesday, April 10th at the PRSM Awards Luncheon, DOE’s Jason Hartke with the assistance of our very own Marta Schantz, recognized 7 organizations for the 2018 Advanced RTU Campaign Awards. Get this: these 7 organizations saved a combined 50 million kWh and $5 million in energy savings from RTU activities including replacements, control retrofits and automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD) technologies! Here are the organizations recognized:
WALGREENS: Highest number of high-efficiency RTU installations and advanced RTU control retrofits. Walgreens replaced 3,988 RTUs with high-efficiency units, resulting in over 35.7 million kWh annual savings.
DAVITA, INC.: Highest number of automated fault detection and diagnostic (AFDD) installations on RTUs. DaVita installed 4,889 AFDD systems on their RTUs.
SHEETZ: Most innovative intelligent control installations for RTUs. Sheetz applied innovative control strategies that save energy and improve occupant comfort in convenience stores.
LIFE TIME FITNESS: Largest RTU efficiency gain from integration of multiple building systems. Life Time Fitness has implemented creative solutions to integrate several systems that resulted in significant reductions in RTU runtimes and improved performance.
MASS SAVE (with ENERGY SOLUTIONS). Highest number of high-efficiency RTU installations and advanced RTU control retrofits through an efficiency program. The Energy Solutions program reported 6,444 high-efficiency RTU installations in Massachusetts, resulting in over 9.6 million kWh annual savings.
TRI PACIFIC HEATING & A/C. Highest number of high-efficiency RTU installations and advanced RTU control retrofits by a contractor/service provider. Tri-Pacific reported 873 advanced RTU control retrofits in California, resulting in over 5 million kWh annual savings.
TRANSFORMATIVE WAVE. Highest number of automated fault detection and diagnostic (AFDD) installations on RTUs. Transformative Wave supported 953 AFDD system installations.
In addition to the Awards Luncheon, Marta moderated a PRSM power session called “Getting the Most of Your RTUs with AFDD” alongside the Campaign’s Michael Deru from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sue Dunn from Sheetz. The trio discussed AFDD basics, findings and experiences in a jam-pa
cked power session.
